Lovely Crafty Weekend #1

Welcome to the FIRST Lovely Crafty Weekend! After a few months of linking up on other blogs, I have finally decided to host my own party so I can check out all your awesome projects in one place! I hope you all will join me every Friday for my weekend wrap-up :) Mondays I will pick a few favorites (either of mine or most viewed by you) to feature.

Only a few rules:

1) Please link to a specific post, not your blog address.

2) Share the love and comment on other people’s blogs! We all love comments!

3) Please join my Google Friend network.

4) Please grab my button and link back so others can join in the fun!

Without further ado…let’s see it!

Williams Sonoma Inspired Hurricane Vase

How would you like to have these beauties on your table?

These are the (now discontinued) Williams Sonoma Hayden Hurricanes. At over $100 a pop, there is no way they’re gracing my table. Fortunately, many thrifty bloggers like myself have figured out an alternative. Head down to your Dollar Store/Tree and pick up a couple of candlesticks and vases.

Get out your Gorilla Glue and line the rim of the candlestick with a thin strip of glue. Center it on the bottom of the vase.

Voila! WS style without the price.

You could vary them by using different sizes/shapes of vases. There are tons of options out there. If you can’t find these items at a Dollar Tree, you can find them at craft stores.

Twine Wrapped Napkin Rings

I was in the Dollar Tree the other day looking for these.

Why, you ask? Well after seeing some amazing inspiration photos online, I decided to try my hand at this simple project. I imagine that these packs usually sell for $1/ea, but for some reason they rang up as $0.25/each. Yes, that’s right-8 rings for $0.50!

I chose twine because I happened to have it, but I’ve seen this done with burlap or fabric as well. To start, I hot glued one end of a LONG piece of twine (it takes more than you think, I kept running out…) to the inside of the ring, in the middle.

Then I began wrapping, stopping to hot glue about every 4th wrap.

You’ll want to keep squishing the wraps together so that you can’t see the original ring. Once you’ve gone all the way around, hot glue the tail on the inside of the ring so it doesn’t show and trim. Now here’s the fun part. Get some cute ribbon and accents to add some bling! I used 2 kinds of ribbon (it takes about 6 yards) and some jewelry pieces. The jewels came in an 8 pack which was perfect!

I hot glued the ribbon all the way around, then glued the jewel on top where the ribbon ends meet.

Now I don’t actually have any cloth napkins, but now I’m tempted to make some! Have any of you made napkins and/or rings? Do share!

Ten on Tuesday

I’m participating in It’s a Crafty Life’s weekly party, check it out here. It will be a fun exercise in stream-of-consciousness blogging, so hang in there-this may or may not turn out well ;)

1. We had a great time over the holidays with my husband’s family, but I really love coming home to our house. I have put so much of myself into it, I feel proud whenever I walk inside. Plus the cats were still alive, so that was a bonus.

2. I have TONS of projects planned for the coming weeks, but I honestly don’t know if I’ll get to them all! In the works is a major basement renovation plus a craft area for me. I’m so excited about this project, but also scared because it involves some new skills we’ll need to acquire (um, drywall, anyone?)

3. I have no idea how to get rid of our Christmas tree. It occurred to me to ask my husband what we did with the one last year, and he told me we threw it in the woods in our backyard. In response to my horrified expression, he replied, “What? It’s biodegradeable!”

4. I secretly love the snow because I get to show off my Jeep. It’s a ’94 with 333, 8xx miles on it.

When it runs. Ok, we all need a little help sometimes! Don’t hate!

5. I think I will start trying really hard to do weekly meal planning. I’ve tried it before, but for some reason cannot keep up with it. I’m a run-to-the-store-for-whatever-I-need type of person which makes food planning difficult. But, I think it would be a great way to save money and eat better.

6. I am obsessed with the Keurig machine. So much so, that my mother in law bought me the storage drawer for Christmas. Tee hee.

7. I am not a great seamstress, but I’ve grown to love sewing. I’ve made pillows, Christmas stockings, and gifts so far. I’ve got some things up my sleeve for the new year though!

8. I love brunch. I would eat it any time of day. I often host a weekend brunch for my friends.

9. There is nothing I’d rather be doing than crafting or DIYing something for the house and blogging about it. I’m so excited to have found this passion. Connecting with other creative people and learning new ideas has been an amazing side effect :) I am constantly inspired by others.

10. I do not make New Year’s Resolutions. But, if I did, more blogging/networking/fun/projects would be on the list :)
