Sweater Weather: Knitting for Hulaween! October 17, 2013 Hulaween 3 Comments 5586 In just under two weeks, I’m heading to Live Oak, FL to experience my first music festival! I announced a couple of weeks ago my plans to attend Hulaween at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP). {The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park, Spirit Lake} No doubt this scene alone will be impressive over Halloween weekend at Suwannee Hulaween. But this year, for the first time, Spirit Lake will be home to an art and light installation of epic proportions! The Spirit Lake Promenade promises a “fusion of dazzling lights, art installations and performance art that morphs the Spirit Lake waterfront and adjacent forest into a vivid dream-like space that fully engages the senses. ” (click HERE for the full article) Three words: Count me in. I’m so super excited that my first music festival experience happens to be coinciding with the Spirit Lake Promenade. I could not believe it when I was asked if I’d like to contribute something to the installation! To be clear, I never fancied myself an artist before. Technically I dabble in the arts. But I thought it would be such an amazing opportunity to be involved that I knew I had to come up with something. Having never been to the park before- or any music festival for that matter- I really had no idea what would fit into that atmosphere. I tried to think of the list of things I could do that didn’t involve refinishing furniture or home improvement: knitting, sewing, hmmm…. I had kind of decided on knitting, then vaguely remembered reading something about yarn bombing once. I did some Google image searching to see if this was 1) a legit art form and 2) something I could reasonably do. Check out these inspirational photos I found: {Source Unknown} {Source Unknown} Now we’ve already established I’m a total noob when it comes to music festivals, but I thought this looked pretty darn neat. I pitched the idea to my Festie Friend and fellow attendee for this event- just to make sure I wasn’t missing the mark. The only note was to go NEON, to which I wholeheartedly agreed. I’ve never yarn-bombed before though…so I came up with a plan. My idea is to knit individual stripes that will be put up by a group of people (versus the more traditional method of a large blanket-like piece that is stitched down the seam in place). This way, we get a completely unique work of art on site! To help make my yarn bomb case to the Art Director, I knit up some scrap yarn for a test run. Even though this was much smaller in scale than I’m hoping to do at Spirit Lake, the effect was still really neat. Several people stopped to look just in the short time I was shooting. It is curious, I mean it’s a sweater for a tree. What do you think? Have you ever yarn bombed or heard of this phenomenon before? As a huge Breaking Bad fan (waaaaaaahhhh), I must share with you this final shot of some yarn in action. {instagram.com / Via brokelyn.com} So I’ve been busy knitting my fingers off, compulsively planning for camping, and freaking out over wardrobe choices- all of which will hopefully make me look like I’ve done this before. But once I get there, it’s all about having a great time and enjoying the music. {The Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park} I can’t wait!! And you can bet on pictures of the whole thing upon my return. But hey, even if you’re not dying to see String Cheese Incident at Hulaween, there are TONS of things to do at this one-of-a-kind park. I follow them on Facebook and often times I wish I lived closer by to pop in on some of the events. It’s definitely worth checking out The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park if you love to camp or are looking for a family vacation. Locals: I’m officially jealous. 3 Responses Marsha Milstock October 17, 2013 Love the colours you choose. I yarn bombed a chair this past spring. I did not know how to knit, so stuck with basic stitches, and used wool that was textured. Had sooooo much fun. Have a great experience.
