Apples Gone Wild October 1, 2010 Recipes 4041 Fall in Asheville is so amazing, I wait all year to leave windows open and run in the cool mornings. What better way to celebrate the start of fall than with some good old fashioned apple picking. Every year we try to head up to Sky Top Orchard and pick as many apples as we can lug back to the car. This year, even the rainy weather couldn’t stop us on our quest. We hiked further than ever before to find trees still filled with apples. Mutsu, Granny Smith, Gala, and Blushing Gold were still plentiful- and perfect for our marathon cooking and baking plans. First up was Apple Butter, a southern favorite. We even tackled canning- click here for the recipe (**Note-we cut the sugar to 5 cups, 4c white and 1c brown). And of course, there’s always Apple Pie. And Apple Dumplings… We baked our fingers off, but overall it was an awesome day filled with great friends, yummy treats (and some hiking to balance it out)!
