Just in time for the cooler weather, I got an opportunity to upgrade our thermostat! In our house, we definitely like to use our HVAC system. We use it year round. I guess you could say we like to keep the house like a climate controlled museum exhibit 😉

I’m not proud of it, so I’m always looking for ways to be more mindful about our energy usage. Using a smart thermostat is a great way to help, so we were super excited to install the Wiser Air model.

First things first, we had to remove the old one. My husband happens to be an electrical engineer, but you don’t have to be one to do this simple installation and setup. With both written and video instructions, it should be pretty straight forward. Remember to turn off power to your air handler and heat pump before proceeding.

It’s a good idea to take a picture of your old wiring to reference later. Once you remove your existing thermostat, you can match the wires your new one (they are similarly coded, typically), and just plug them in! Just one of the new awesome features we realized right away was that we didn’t need batteries anymore. Power would be supplied directly by the (blue) common wire, previously not connected. Already saving money, yes!

The hardest part for us was having to install new drywall anchors for the mount haha! We decided to use the wall plate that came with the unit to cover up some much needed paint touchups/old anchors. I thought this was an awesome optional addition included in the box!!

If at any time the wiring isn’t making sense, you can always contact their customer service as well. Ours was really simple to switch!

Once we plugged it in, it automatically fired up to the start screen. The steps were very straight forward, it asks you a series of questions to make sure the wiring is correct and to get set up on your wireless network.

Once it’s all set up, you really get to see all the features this thermostat offers. It’s sleek and takes up a small footprint. It has this cool ambient halo (optional) that turns blue for cooling, yellow for heating and green when Eco IQ™ is saving energy.

The Eco IQ™ feature is the real meat and potatoes of this little guy. It’s designed to learn your habits by taking into consideration your feedback, home thermal profile, humidity, outdoor weather, and system run times. Utilizing Schneider Electric top rated weather service, you can be kept up to date on weather conditions in your area and how they may affect your home environment.

By syncing the thermostat with a mobile app, Wiser Air starts learning about your heating and cooling needs. It’s the only smart thermostat that has a Windows app, so don’t fret if you’re not an iPhone user (it also works with Android)! You can purchase the Wiser Air Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat at,, the Microsoft Store, New Egg or

We’re looking forward to seeing how it learns about our household! On average it takes about a week, depending on how much feedback you give. It seems like a pretty easy way to make a big difference in our energy use, especially going into winter 🙂
